This Is Us: Dirt, Dishes, and Doing Our Best

If you’re looking for a perfectly curated homestead with spotless counters, obedient children, and meals served hot and on time… this probably isn’t the place for you. Around here, dirt on the floor usually means someone had a great day, the sink is almost never empty, and “doing our best” is the official family motto.

Welcome to our life.

We’re a homesteading family trying to raise good humans, grow our own food, and survive motherhood with a sense of humor and a lot of grace. Some days look like fresh bread cooling on the counter and kids running barefoot through the yard. Other days look like sensory overload, big feelings, and reheated coffee that’s been microwaved one too many times. Both days are real. Both days matter.

Why I Started This Blog

I started this blog because I couldn’t find the kind of space I needed when motherhood got hard. I wanted honesty without judgment, laughter without pretending, and encouragement that didn’t feel scripted or sugar-coated.

Motherhood changed me in ways I never expected—especially raising a child with autism. It taught me to slow down, to notice the small wins, and to redefine what “success” really looks like. Sometimes success is a peaceful morning. Sometimes it’s just making it through the day with everyone fed and mostly dressed.

Homesteading became part of that slower life. Growing food, tending animals, and working with our hands grounded us when everything else felt overwhelming. It isn’t perfect. We’ve lost plants, learned lessons the hard way, and discovered that chickens do not, in fact, care about personal space. But it’s ours—and it’s teaching our kids more than any picture-perfect setup ever could.

What You’ll Find Here

This space is a mix of everything that makes up our days:

  • Simple, family-friendly recipes that don’t require fancy ingredients or extra energy
  • Practical mom tips and shortcuts that actually work in real life
  • Honest conversations about autism, neurodiversity, and sensory-friendly living
  • Homesteading stories—the good, the messy, and the “what were we thinking?” moments
  • Faith, encouragement, and reminders that you’re not failing—you’re learning

No perfection. No filters. Just real life, shared from one mama to another.

From Our Home to Yours

If you’re a mom who feels like she’s doing a hundred things at once… if your house is loud, your heart is full, and your days don’t look like anyone else’s highlight reel—you’re in the right place.

Pull up a chair. Bring your coffee (or reheat it again). Laugh with us, learn with us, and know that here, dirt under the nails and dishes in the sink mean you’re living a full life.

This is us—dirt, dishes, and doing our best. And I’m really glad you’re here.
